 Test Question
For a named city in an LIC, explain the management strategies being used to minimise the problems of shanty towns (squatter communities).

Name of city: San Paulo
In Sao Paulo there are 2500 favelas (informal settlements). To improve these areas there are a number of strategies: Community, Self help, NGO’s and Micro lending.
Community: These areas need a strong community if they want to improve their environment.
Self help: NGO’s give the community materials, of which they use to improve their buildings.

Micro lending: Lending small sums of money to people running businesses in favelas to help develop the business.
For Favelas to be improved some of these methods need to be applied.

Stages of a Shanty Town

Stage one: the 'Invaders' invade the land and over the time of about a year make small shelters.

Stage two: Consolidation, More migrants move from rural areas and improve the shanty town by self help. and people start to work at TNC's.
Stage three: Upgrading, People who live here are more settled and electricity is supplied. Also getting loans from the city to help improve the way of living. They also have running water, enough for a small garden.
Stage four: Assimilation, the area is now optimised and has paved roads which cars can use, there also shops and schools and people have cars and proper windows. This stage takes around 20 years to get here.
